Watkins Glen

Oil, 2017

A walk through Watkins Glen evokes a stroll through one of the grand palaces and castles of Europe, with its scale and majestic beauty. As an artist, I am drawn to unlocking the deep colors and sense of quiet intimacy of a scene in a way that cameras cannot. I started with a plein air study of the falls, which helped me to later recall the magic of the scene beyond the picture itself – the sound of leaping waters, the fragrance of early summer foliage, and the warmth of the sun prodding its way into hidden grottos.
