In Flux

oil on canvas, 2015

The composition of "In Flux" resulted from an attempt to arrange a photograph of foil in a way that mimicked the spatial devices of a landscape painting. Taking cues from the work of Uta Barth, who creates abstract photographs that employ extreme cropping, soft focus and unconventional angles, the manipulation is done solely through the lens rather than with editing software. In "In Flux," the foreground of the painting is in sharp focus and has strong contrast between color values which lead the eye down to the bottom of the canvas and then off into the blurry distance.
