Artwork #22

Saul Jerome San Juan

Barton Creek, January 11, 2014

Acrylic on canvas, 2016

This is one of four paintings I completed with children at the Austin Police Department Summer Youth Leadership Program. Over two weeks, using my current limited palette of transparent and opaque, yellow and red iron oxides tempered by carbon black and titanium white, the children made four 36" x 36” paintings from 4" x 6” photographic prints of square Instagram pictures I took of 5" x 7” and 6" x 6” paintings I completed of Barton Creek on site in the Greenbelt. In the process, I engaged the children in color theory and Postmodernist art practice. Josef Albers, Walter Benjamin, and Susan Sontag would likely approve.
