Oil on canvas, 2014
This hawksbill sea turtle was found as a hatchling tangled in a discarded fishing net with both right limbs completely severed. Every year, thousands of sea turtles are caught in nets and nearly all species are endangered. As former head of graphics at the Dallas Zoo and Children's Aquarium, I now generally oppose animal captivity. Nonetheless, I recognize that had the Children's Aquarium not taken in this hawksbill, it would not have survived. It is unknown if it is male or female. Alone in a tank it's entire mature life, it has never had the opportunity to mate or lay eggs.
